The Infertility Treatment Centre of East Tallinn Central Hospital needs a time-lapse incubator to increase the probability of a pregnancy in case of in vitro fertilisation so that many more children would be born
The goal of the charity campaign “Help children to be born!” (“Aita lapsed ellu”) is to raise donations for buying a time-lapse incubator for the Infertility Treatment Centre of East Tallinn Central Hospital in order to increase the effectiveness of infertility treatments. The device will be of great help to families which have difficulty conceiving a child the natural way.
Around one in ten families in Estonia faces infertility, which means they cannot conceive a child the natural way. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) helps such families to achieve pregnancy.
The rate of success in case of in vitro fertilisation in Estonia is currently between 35% and 40%, and the new time-lapse incubator allows the rate of IVF treatments resulting in a pregnancy to be increased to as much as 50%. This means that every other of the implanted embryos could develop into a sought-after pregnancy. The time-lapse incubator will also allow embryos of the highest quality to be selected for implantation, which would ensure better results in patients in older age groups as well as those who have had repeatedly failed treatments and would also decrease the number of missed miscarriages at early pregnancy stages.
An embryo is a foetus at an early development stage which emerges when a woman’s egg is fertilised by a man’s sperm. In case of in vitro fertilisation, embryos are grown and monitored in laboratory conditions until day 6 of development. The operating principle of the incubators currently in use in Estonian infertility treatment clinics implies that the embryologist must take the embryo out for assessment and development monitoring under the microscope at least once a day. Embryos are hypersensitive, and any changes in their environment have a negative impact on their development. Moreover, when incubation chambers are opened and closed, changes in the embryo’s growth environment occur. The environment conditions are not restored instantly, which also affects the quality and further implantation of the embryo.
The new incubator can capture the entire embryo development process by means of the time-lapse technology, and embryos do not need to be removed from the incubator for monitoring. There is continuous temperature control, and the air is constantly purified by filters, so embryos can develop in a stable growth environment similar to natural conditions in the womb.
The time-lapse incubator features an integrated camera which takes photos of the embryos at pre-set intervals. The time-lapse technology allows the embryo development process to be monitored on the screen and saved in real time, morphological changes in embryos to be more accurately identified, embryonic development to be monitored and implantation success rate to be improved.
The experience of the world’s leading infertility treatment centres provides ample proof of the effectiveness of time-lapse incubators. A state-of-the-art time-lapse incubator will be the first of its kind in Estonia and will contribute to more much awaited and healthy babies being born.
