Things to consider when coming to give birth

We will be ready for you at the maternity hospital of East-Tallinn Central Hospital at Ravi 18 once you have gone into labour or your waters have broken.  With regard to the Covid-19 outbreak in Estonia, we are taking additional safety precautions to make sure mothers-to-be and their newborn children are safe and sound.

When you arrive at the maternity hospital, you will be given a protective mask and you must fill in a health declaration before your appointment to specify whether you have had contact with persons with Covid-19 or persons who have recently arrived from a foreign country. Your temperature will also be taken.

All women coming to give birth will be tested for the coronavirus by their midwife to rule out and determine any possible hidden Covid-19 infection.  To do this, the midwife (dressed in protective gear) will insert a slim swab stick to your nasal cavity to collect a secretion sample from your pharynx for testing. Analysis results usually come back in a few hours. This is primarily needed to ensure safe care for the newborn after the delivery.

Regular admission proceedings continue after taking the test. You will be asked about your health status and subjected to cardiotocography, you will also have your blood pressure taken and other analyses will be performed if necessary. A hospital employee will then see you to the delivery room. The mother-to-be will be required to wear a mask until their coronavirus test results come back as negative.

All mothers-to-be will be delighted to learn that the father of the child or other loved ones or cohabiting family members will be allowed to attend the birth as of 18 May. Family members who arrive at the hospital to attend a birth must be healthy and comply with the additional safety precautions set out by the hospital. At East-Tallinn Central Hospital, all family members attending a birth must also fill in a health declaration and have their temperature taken upon arrival. Wearing a surgical protection mask is mandatory for the duration of the visit and partners will not be allowed to leave the hospital at any time. Doulas and other alternative support persons are not allowed at the maternity ward as of yet. Due to safety reasons, family members are not allowed in the OR for caesarean sections – the more people in the room, the harder it is to ensure their controlled movement and avoid accidental contact for all parties.

Family members must leave the hospital once the person giving birth is transferred from the maternity ward to a postpartum room. Therefore, we recommend that you make sure before coming to the hospital that you have your charger and everything needed to use a computer. Free Wi-Fi is available to everyone at the hospital and you can use various online solutions to contact your loved ones and share pictures of your newborn during your postpartum hospital stay.

Regardless of the fact that work organisation at the maternity ward will remain out of the ordinary, we would like to assure all women coming to give birth that our staff is always on hand to give advice and support – feel free to ask for anything you want or need.

Even in the unexpected event that the you have caught the coronavirus, we will ensure all necessary support and do everything we can, whilst following every safety measure, to make sure the you and your baby are safe and sound.

See you at the maternity ward of East-Tallinn Central Hospital!
